We use a slim, low-profile stone inside our Open Fire Cookers because we prioritise clean aesthetics and maximum usable space. The low-profile design helps preserve valuable room in both the firebox and oven, giving you more space to cook while maintaining the sleek, considered design of Billy.
These high-temperature stones form the stone floor inside the firebox and oven, helping to insulate the appliance while providing a solid cooking surface where required.
Over time, stones can naturally develop cracks from repeated heating and cooling. A cracked stone does not compromise the structural integrity of your Billy Smoker. The stones are primarily there to provide insulation and thermal protection, rather than structural support.
For stones in the firebox, replacement is therefore generally aesthetic or optional. Once a good bed of ash has built up, the stones should remain covered during normal operation. The ash acts as an additional layer of insulation and cushioning, helping protect the stones from rapid temperature changes and reducing the likelihood of further cracking.
If a stone is being used as a cooking surface in the oven, however, you may choose to replace it when cracked or damaged to maintain a clean, usable cooking surface.
Ash is your friend. We recommend allowing ash to build up around and over the stones, rather than regularly cleaning the firebox completely bare. This provides additional cushioning and insulation and helps protect the stones from thermal shock.
Avoid throwing or dropping large pieces of wood roughly into the firebox. A heavy impact from a log landing directly on a stone can cause it to crack or break, independent of the normal thermal cracking that can occur during use.
Cooking stones can be removed and washed in warm soapy water when required. Always allow them to dry completely before lighting Billy again, as the stones absorb water and can crack if heated while damp.
